Frankfurter Wäldchestag

Frankfurt Forest Festival
(22nd - 26th May 2026)

The unofficial bank holiday of the metropolis on the River Main

The exact origins of this festival are not clear, but many residents of Frankfurt were traditionally granted an additional holiday on the Tuesday after Whitsun to visit the festival grounds. Even though only a few companies still follow this tradition today, Wäldchestag still has a very special significance in Frankfurt.

"Wäldchestag is our city's bank holidays and has a long tradition. Frankfurters visit the city forest on the long Whitsun weekend and experience a festival for the whole family in a unique atmosphere", says Mike Josef, Lord Mayor of the City of Frankfurt am Main.

The Frankfurt Rhine-Main Region

Frankfurt's beautiful surrounding area

Frankfurt is surrounded by a beautiful region with countless possibilities for excursions and day trips, named after the Rhine and Main rivers which cross through it. Situated before the gates of Frankfurt, the beautiful Rheingau, for example, is the birthplace of one of the world’s most popular varieties of wine, the famous Riesling. Why not stay a little longer and enjoy a wine tasting session at Eberbach Monastery, one of the settings of the film, “The Name of the Rose”? Or enjoy a sightseeing cruise on the River Main or Rhine, passing by a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Or simply enjoy one of the events celebrating 03 October, Germany’s national bank holiday (aka the Day of German Unity), which features countless festivals held throughout the region.

Pharmacies

Unlike to many other countries, pharmacies in Germany are visually marked with a red “A” depicted in old-style German script rather than the traditional green cross. These days, however, the “A” is being supplemented more and more by the more international green pharmacy cross.
